Trentino – South Tyrol is one of the most peculiar regions of Italy. Consisting of two autonomous provinces, the Italian-speaking Trentino, with its capital city Trento, and the mostly German-speaking South Tyrol (Alto Adige in Italian, Südtirol in German) with Bozen (Bolzano) as capital, the region extends south to north from Lake Garda to the Italian-Austrian border and is renowned for having some of the most terrific mountain ranges in the world, including the famous Dolomites.

Part of the Austrian Empire until 1918, the whole region shows all its multicultural background, which combines Mediterranean and Nordic culture into a unique ensemble.
For example, the local cuisine mixes south-European and north-European influences and it is not uncommon to find in the same restaurant typically Italian pasta or gnocchi dishes and Austrian-German ones such as knödel, goulash soup, and Bratwürstel mit Sauerkraut.

Such diversity is also expressed by the region’s museums, many of which are among the best in Italy in their genres, including the MART museum of modern art in Rovereto, the MuSe science museum in Trento, the Museion contemporary art museum in Bozen and the iconic Messner Mountain Museum Corones located on an alpine peak near Bruneck / Brunico.
