Looking Over and Under the Sea – two exhibitions at the Maritime Museum
We present here two exhibitions currently running in the fascinating spaces of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona.
The museum, housed in the impressive Royal Shipyard, the Drassanes Reials, is focused on the relationship between man and the sea. Both exhibition features, from different points of view, the history of maritime traveling and exploration.
A voyage overseas
Viatge mar enllà (A voyage overseas) is a semi-permanent exhibition, running until 31 December 2015, which depicts the various forms of maritime travel. Through objects, equipment, old maps, videos, images, and reconstructions, the exhibition narrates how man approached the sea with ships and boats, sometimes with curiosity, sometimes with fear, for different reasons: exploration, trade, leisure, to bring glory to a nation or to find a new place to live.
The challenge of underwater photography
Càmeres submarines. El repte de fotografiar sota l’aigua (Underwater cameras. The challenge of underwater photography) depicts the history of underwater photography.
The exhibition, open until 12 April 2015, presents over 200 items, from a replica of the first waterproof camera built in 1893 to the famous Hans Haas’ Rolleimarine and the camera used in James Cameron’s “Titanic”, from early diving equipment to rare photographs and magazines, such as the 1927 issue of National Geographic, the first to publish underwater color photos.
