The new NORR – National Museum in Östersund, in the Jämtland region of Sweden, is currently under development on a design by Henning Larsen Architects.
The building conceived by the Danish architectural firm will be located in the Jamtli site – one of the most popular cultural and historical destinations in the region and inter-connected with it.

The Danish architects’ proposal, entitled “Skrinet” (Shrine) has been selected after an international design competition held in Spring 2015. When completed, the building will form, together with the existing Jamtli Museum, a new cultural complex, branch of the Swedish National Museum.

The museum has been conceived by Henning Larsen Architects as a large wood sculpture, whose dimensions, multi-gable roof, and cladding materials have been chosen in accordance with the constructions already present on the site. However, the architects’ objective was to create, along with a building coherent with the context, also a striking, iconic new architecture.

The new museum will accommodate a large exhibition space, workshops, offices, and a cafe-restaurant, which will make the cultural site of Östersund more functional and attractive.
The new exhibition hall is designed as a wooden sculpture with an easily recognizable silhouette against the sky. The roof is unique due to the deep skylights that filter the soft northern daylight directly into the exhibition space. This gives a very sensitive light as well as a view to the sky” (from Henning Larsen Architects’ project description).

The new building, scheduled for completion in 2018, will make it possible for the Nationalmuseum Norr to present three exhibitions each year, featuring artworks on long-term loan from other institutions, as well as pieces from the Jamtli Museum’s collections.
